Capitol Hill Update
The Month of May
After a two-week recess for Easter, Congress returned to Washington, D.C. this week. On May 1st the leaders of the House Motorcycle Caucus introduced House Resolution 338, declaring May 2019 Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The resolution sponsored by Congressman Michael Burgess (R-TX) and Tim Walberg (R-MI) reads in part:
“Resolved, That the House of Representatives—
(1) supports the designation of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month;
(2) recognizes the contribution of motorcycles to the transportation mix;
(3) encourages motorcycle awareness by all road users;
(4) recognizes that motorcyclists have a right to the road and that all motorists should safely share the roadways;
(5) encourages rider education and training for safe motorcycle operation; and
(6) supports the goals of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.”
Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) stated: “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is an important opportunity to remind car and truck drivers to always be on the lookout for a nearby motorcycle.”
For the first time in over a decade, the House of Representatives has introduced a measure recognizing motorcycles in the month of May, and we hope it helps foster continued positive conversations about motorcycles on Capitol Hill. See full House Resolution 338 here: BILLS-116hres338ih.pdf
Continued Momentum on H. Res. 255
Since our last update, we have added two more co-sponsors, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Rep. Don Young (R-AK) to H. Res. 255. We want to thank everyone who has sent an email asking your U.S. Representative to support the anti-motorcyclist profiling resolution and encourage you to send another email to remind them that this issue is still important to you. Membership Dues to Increase
For those of you who haven’t heard on May 20, 2019, some of the membership dues for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation will increase for the first time in many years. With new and emerging threats on the horizon, this action has become necessary to ensure your MRF has the tools it needs to continue to be an aggressive advocate for riders across the United States. Before this increase goes into effect, we are offering our loyal members and supporters a chance to renew your membership at the current price.
