Friday from DC - FTC Hearing Comments On Right To Repair

Federal Trade Commission
Hearing Public Comments On
Right To Repair

This week the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) submitted comments to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on the need for rulemaking regarding the right to repair. The FTC has opened public comments because of the petitions filed by two (2) groups, iFixit and the US Public Interest Research Group.

The petition requests rulemaking by the FTC that would require companies to make a product’s components easily replaceable throughout its lifespan and ensure that parts that easily break are available as repair parts. The petition also asks for rules that allow consumers to take products to a repair shop of their choice or allow for do-it-yourself repair.

The MRF has long supported Right to Repair initiatives. On the legislative front, we continue to champion H.R. 906, Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair Act (REPAIR Act), which would address this topic through congressional action. Our comments to the FTC are another way the MRF continues to push federal officials to protect motorcyclists and the aftermarket industry we rely on.

A vibrant aftermarket industry is critical to sustaining motorcycling in this country. Without access to the parts, tools and information needed to repair and modify our motorcycles, we face losing a unique part of American culture.
