11NR17 - MRF News Release - Sensenbrenner Resolution and BITB

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
27 April 2011

Contact: Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs

Sensenbrenner Resolution

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports that US Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) will be introducing a House Resolution supporting the law that prohibits the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from lobbying the States for legislation.  The resolution also urges NHTSA to make motorcycle crash prevention their number one priority when they address motorcycle safety.

Sensenbrenner said, "Despite significant opposition from Congress, NHTSA continues its attempts to mandate universal one-size-fits-all motorcycle helmet laws.  NHTSA believes that the first step in saving a motorcyclist's life in the event of a crash is to mandate helmet use.  The fact is, that preventing a crash from occurring through rider education, training and proper licensing are the best methods to increase motorcyclists' safety.  I agree that wearing a helmet can protect a motorcycle rider, but helmets do not prevent crashes."

Please contact your Member of the US House and ask them to cosponsor the Sensenbrenner Resolution. The resolution is without a bill number for now and officially drops May 2nd, 2011.  You can reach the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.

BIKERS INSIDE THE BELTWAY AND BEAST OF THE EAST

The third annual Michael '‘Boz' Kerr Bikers Inside the Beltway is shaping up to be a terrific event. There will be an organized ride from the BEAST of the East hotel. Otherwise, if you are not riding to the event but still want to come from the hotel, there is public transportation that can put you a few blocks from the event.

Please plan on assembling here: http://tinyurl.com/BITB2011.  The MRF will have staff on hand from 9-11am to provide lobby materials for you give to your Members of Congress.  The MRF also has a scheduled event from 1:30-3:00 in B-318 of the Rayburn Building where we will be hearing from an assortment of Members of Congress. We ask that you encourage your Member of the US House to stop by the event. They have all received a hard copy invite. Should they want to address the group, ask that they contact the MRF DC office to set a time.
